really messy.
Here are pictures of the process
We try to give the group a sense of what really happens to the paper in the recycle bin after the big truck comes to take it away.
Step One: The shredder
Here we took colorful scrap paper from a previous project and shredded it to get ready for the blender.
Step Two: The Blender
Just a small handful of the shredded paper scraps go into every blenderfull of water. This is how the pulp is made.
Step Three: The Slurry
When you dump all of the pulp from the blender together plus a bucket of water you have the slurry. This picture also shows adding glitter to the mix. You can also add extras like string, leaves, and flowers.
Step Four: Straining
Using a screen and a deckle the pulp is pulled up from the vat of slurry into a mostly even sheet
Step Five: Pressing
After lifting the pulp wiht the screen and removing the deckle, the paper is put onto felt before being pressed.
It is a little tricky to get it nice and even so we try to go quickly.

After getting the screen down evenly it is good to pressout some of the water from the paper before picking up the screen.
The screen will lift off easily as it sort of clings to the felt now.
Before pressing put another piece of felt on top to protect it from getting stuck to the press.
It is important to press out as much water as possible, otherwise the paper takes a long time to dry. The press also helps to make the paper surface a bit more even.
